Desktop Environment
GNOME is
a popular desktop environment with an easy to use graphical user
interface. menu-based navigation and is sometimes an easy transition for
at least some Windows users. it defaults desktop environment for many distributions including Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Fedora, CentOS, SUSE Linux Enterprise, and Debian. Almost enterprise version use GNOME.
KDE defaults in openSUSE.
Unity, Xfce and LXDE are based on GNOME

lightdm (used on Ubuntu)
kdm (associated with KDE)
